Scam Awareness and Carers Week – June 2018
Our Research and Campaign have been busy with a month long national campaign for Scam Awareness and Carer’s Week during 11 to 17 June 2018.It was decided that we would combine these events into a series of presentations and information displays around the borough.
We identified three local support groups for residents who have a disability or a long term health condition and arranged to speak to them on the combined campaigns. Steve Marchant, Research and Campaigns Researcher, attended all three groups;
Airtime, for people with lung disease, HUGS, a support group for people who have had heart surgery, and the Stroke Association. All sessions were well attended, with wide ranging discussion on Carer’s Allowance, qualifying benefits, avoiding/reporting scams and attendees recounting their experiences of scams.
In Carer’s week Steve set up an information stand at Sainsbury’s, Amblecote and spoke to staff and customers about both campaigns.
Throughout the month there was a scam awareness display at Age UK, Shopmobility at Merry Hill centre. This was used as a means of engaging with customers seeking wheelchair hire, who may have care needs and could be vulnerable to scam methods, especially bank card and identity fraud. We spoke to a number of people, using this display and all the information available, to warn of the methods employed by scammers to part them from their money.
